Benoit Paire(23) vs. Federico Coria

A man full of character and distinctive flair, yet a great slice of controversy inevitably follows Benoit Paire. The enigmatic Frenchman is known for his antics, both on and off the court. A worldwide pandemic hasn’t changed that. After months of anxiously waiting, a bio-secure bubble was made to enable the 2020 US Open.
The 31-year old Geneva resident had retired in qualifying down 0-6, 0-1 against Borna Coric, visibly ill. Paire would later test positive for COVID-19, automatically disqualifying him from the draw and placing seven more French players under enhanced protocols.
More controversy would follow as the world no.26 allegedly tested positive yet played in Hamburg last week: “I say thank you to the doctor and to the tournament, they let me play.” Coming into this tournament quoting he wasn’t physically or mentally, Paire won in straight sets in his first-round match nonetheless.
He will need to be operating at a high level in his next encounter, as clay-court specialist Federico Coria is next up, another man who’s had his fair share of controversy. The 28-year old Argentinian and younger brother of 2004 Roland-Garros runner-up Guillermo Coria, was suspended for eight months in 2018 along with a $10,000 fine for match-fixing.
Since returning from suspension, Coria has shown what a talented player he truly is and subsequently broke into the top-100 for the first time. It’s been a solid restart for the clay-court specialist, who qualified and made the second round of Rome Masters – upsetting world no.32 Jan-Lennard Struff along the way. Coria trailed in all three sets in his opener against Jason Jung but found a way to win it in straight sets.
This looks to be an intriguing matchup, with plenty of flair on display from both players. Paire will need to keep his head in the game, and not be left frustrated with whatever situation happens out on the court. Coria will look to keep the points long and grind unforced errors out of the Frenchman. It’s difficult finding a clear winner in this contest, and the best sportsbooks agree, giving the home hope a slightly better chance at -125, whereas Coria is available at -105.
When on his game, Paire is quite difficult to break down, as was evidenced in last year’s tournament where he took part in two five-set matches. The over/under is set at 37.5, and in what looks a close contest, we will take the -115 BookMaker price on the over.

Cori Gauff vs. Martina Trevisan(Q)

Cori Gauff continues to impress tennis and sports fans alike, with the 16-year old American phenom scoring another big victory in the first-round encounter with ninth-seeded Johanna Konta. Gauff experienced enormous struggles in the windy conditions, logging a whopping 12 double faults. That didn’t stop her from producing the 6-3, 6-3 win, and in doing so improving her Major record to 8-4, incredible numbers at such a young age.
With a big and normally quite accurate first serve, along with consistent ball striking and deceivingly quick feet, there are few holes in the 16-year old’s game. Add to that the ability to play well in the big moments, and it’s easy to understand how she’s risen to world no. 51 in the rankings.
A tricky rest awaits in round two, however, up against Italian qualifier Martina Trevisan. The 2009 Roland Garros junior runner-up has had to wait 11 years to score her maiden Major main draw win, which was achieved after fellow countrywoman Camila Giorgi retired down 5-7, 0-3. After coming through qualifying for the loss of only one set, Trevisan quickly found herself in a 1-5 hole against her 75-ranked opponent, the best the 26-year old has seen in her career.
Perhaps hardly surprising given this was the maiden main draw made in any Major throughout the qualifier’s career. But after spurning a set point, Giorgi lost steam and Martina wasted no time going on a 9-0 run before an apparent elbow injury forced retirement.
While the WTA tennis odds open Gauff as the overwhelming -296 favorite, Trevisan found at +251, there is reason to expect quite a different result to the implied probabilities. The Italian qualifier poses an entirely different challenge to almost any opponent the 16-year old has come up against: She’s left-handed. Gauff has never faced a left-handed player on the main level and has precious little experience dealing with the angles they can create.
Trevisan has a great return game, often finding depth and puts her opponents in awkward positions. She also possesses plenty of power, especially from the backhand wing. Throughout her career, the clay-court specialist has made a whopping 16 ITF finals on the dirt, winning nine titles. With the wind in her sails and playing with freedom and momentum, Trevisan will be an incredibly difficult task for the young American. At the +251 BetOnline price, the Italian looks incredible value and worth an investment.

Roland Garros is the toughest Grand Slam to win as said by many players, and this is because of the domination of Rafael Nadal over the last 15 years. Here is my pick for the 2020 Roland Garros Men's Singles title:
Roland Garros is one of a kind. Tennis on clay is a beautiful thing and it is unlike any other surface. Players are able to partake in extremely long rallies and show us their best game. Many over the years have tried to win it, but only a few have been able to. Rafael Nadal, the King of Clay, has won the tournament an astonishing 12 times in the last 15 years, and players like Roger Federer, Novak Djokovic, and Stan Wawrinka have struggled greatly in achieving only 1 title in Paris.
This year's tournament will be the toughest challenge yet for Nadal as he will not have had the training period on the clay courts as he usually does with tournaments prior to Roland Garros, however, in my opinion, this does not change a single thing. Nadal on clay is the toughest challenge in tennis history, and if Nadal is healthy, no one can beat him in Roland Garros. Nadal is 93-2 in Paris and he will achieve Roger Federer's Grand Slam record of 20 Grand Slams this year.
